ANTI-CANCER CHALLENGE CHAMPION IN THE FIGHT AGAINST CANCER
When universally admired ophthalmologist Roger Steinert lost his battle with brain cancer in June 2017, it was a personal loss for UCI. In recognition of Dr. Steinert and his dedicated service to the wellbeing of others — as a physician, researcher, academic leader, and, as a patient —we pay tribute to him as the 2018 Anti-Cancer Challenge Champion in the fight against cancer.
Dr. Steinert was a true pioneer in the field of ophthalmology. His breakthrough research produced new laser surgery techniques that stave off blindness and strengthen eyesight.
He was a dedicated and beloved member of our campus community who fervently advocated for the establishment and success of the Gavin Herbert Eye Institute. His bold vision, inspiring leadership, and devotion to his colleagues, students and patients made him one of the most accomplished, celebrated and well-liked experts of his time.
During his battle with cancer, he entrusted his care to UC Irvine Health specialists.
As he once explained, “I didn’t seek treatment at UC Irvine Health because I work here. I sought treatment from my colleagues because the best program for glioblastoma happens to be right here at UC Irvine Health. I’m incredibly grateful to get care near where I live. I had the confidence that the best people were right in the same place I work and where I try to help my own patients.”
It was typical of his gracious nature and desire to teach that he would share his experiences as a cancer patient with others.
Dr. Steinert outlived the statistics, surviving for two-and-a-half years following his glioblastoma diagnosis, in part, because of the clinical trials and the expert care provided by the Chao Family Cancer Center. His lifelong dedication to research played into his decision to participate in trials, allowing UCI to make continued progress toward lifesaving cancer cures during the course of his treatment.
This year, the Anti-Cancer Challenge honors the life of Dr. Roger Steinert as the “2018 Champion in the Fight Against Cancer” for a lifetime of transformational service to improving the vision — and lives — of millions around the world.
